Ethiopia’s Agricultural Revolution Gains Global Spotlight at UN Food Summit
Over the past seven years, Ethiopia has undergone a remarkable agricultural transformation, achieving food
self-sufficiency—particularly in wheat—through bold government initiatives like the Irrigated Wheat Initiative.
This progress has earned international recognition, with Ethiopia being commended and chosen to host the
Second UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) in July 2025, a testament to its leadership in
sustainable food systems. The country’s shift from a wheat importer to one of Africa’s largest agricultural
producer and a net exporter was driven by irrigation, mechanization, climate-resilient farming, and strong
policy support. Initiatives such as “Ye Lemat Turufat” and the “Green Legacy” further boosted food security
through afforestation and crop diversification. Ethiopia’s integrated approach, rooted in innovation and
farmer empowerment, now serves as a model for sustainable food sufficiency in Africa and beyond.
