Galana-Kulalu Revival Marks a New Era for Kenya’s Food Security and Agricultural Self-Sufficiency
Kenya’s long-stalled Galana Kulalu irrigation project has finally come to life, marking a major milestone in the country’s food security journey. The revival, led by President William Ruto’s administration, has already seen 1,500 acres under active maize cultivation, with plans to expand to 10,000 acres in the current phase and 200,000 acres once the Galana Dam is complete. Backed by a KSh 519 million investment and a public-private partnership with Israel’s Selu Africa, the project is now creating jobs, improving local livelihoods, and positioning Kenya to close its maize deficit of up to 15 million bags annually. This success signals a turning point for Kenya’s goal of achieving agricultural self-sufficiency through modern, sustainable irrigation.
