Ethiopia’s Agricultural Milestones Take Center Stage in East Africa’s Push for Food Security
Ethiopia signaled a regional leadership role at the 19th Multidisciplinary Team Meeting, as East African nations launched a joint strategy to advance food security and climate resilience. Officials highlighted Ethiopia’s progress in irrigation expansion, soil health improvement, and commercial agriculture especially strong gains in wheat production and landscape restoration—as a regional model. Leaders from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) stressed that innovation must be paired with partnerships and financing, noting that 75% of Eastern Africans cannot afford healthy meals and one in three children under five faces malnutrition. Key priorities included accelerating investment through the FAO Hand-in-Hand framework, expanding climate-smart agriculture and land restoration, and strengthening regional supply chains by aligning with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and standardizing sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures.
