Once the country’s top foreign exchange earner, the industry is now repositioning itself to meet rising global demand for traceable, premium-grade beans, strengthening its competitiveness against producers in Latin America and Ethiopia. With globally respected SL28 and SL34 varietals grown in volcanic soils around Mount Kenya, the country retains a powerful quality advantage that international specialty roasters are willing to reward. Investments in modern wet mills, enhanced agro-extension support, and stricter cooperative governance are expected to stabilize production and ensure consistent high cupping scores year after year. If sustained, these reforms could unlock significant rural income growth, job creation, and stronger foreign exchange inflows for the national economy.
