Ethiopia’s Wheat Export Milestone Signals Digital-Driven Agricultural Transformation

Moses Vilakati, the African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, praised Ethiopia’s shift from wheat importer to exporter, describing it as a major continental milestone. He noted that the country’s steady investment in agricultural modernization and digital transformation has significantly strengthened its food production systems and reduced reliance on imports. Guided by the African Union Digital Agriculture Strategy 2024–2030, Ethiopia is leveraging digital advisory services, climate information systems, and online marketplaces to raise productivity and build climate resilience. Vilakati emphasized that these technology-driven solutions are expanding farmers’ access to real-time data while creating economic opportunities, particularly for young people. As Africa moves toward the 2027 review cycle, he called on member states to turn strategy into concrete action and follow Ethiopia’s example in pursuing food self-sufficiency.
