Ethiopia Hits Major Wheat Milestone, Harvest Tops 126 Million Quintals in Six Months
Ethiopia has recorded a major boost in food production, with national wheat output reaching 126.69 million quintals in the first two quarters, according to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The gains, achieved even without counting irrigated wheat schemes, reflect expanded cultivation, improved productivity, and stronger support for smallholder farmers under the National Wheat Program. Driven by irrigation expansion, better seed varieties, and climate-smart practices, wheat production is reducing reliance on costly imports and easing pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Analysts project production could rise to a record 6.5 million tonnes in the 2025–26 marketing year, even as imports decline by an estimated 24 percent. While rising population and urban demand continue to stretch consumption, the surge marks a clear step toward long-term food security and agricultural resilience.
