Ethiopia Unveils Phytosanitary Strategy to Strengthen Agriculture Yields and Exports
Ethiopia has launched its Phytosanitary Capacity Development Strategy (2026–2030) to modernize agriculture and strengthen its resilience against plant pests. Developed with support from FAO and the Standards and Trade Development Facility, the strategy will enhance legislation, infrastructure, capacity building, and digital tools for surveillance and diagnostics. Officials highlight that pests have severely reduced yields, raised costs for farmers, and limited export opportunities, making the strategy a vital roadmap for safeguarding biodiversity and boosting safe market access. The initiative also aims to expand agricultural exports, align with international standards, and protect the livelihoods of millions of Ethiopian farmers.
