Revitalizing Agriculture: Ethiopia’s Strategy for Accelerated Economic Development
Ethiopia’s agriculture sector remains the backbone of its economy, contributing 44% of GDP and employing 80% of the population. Despite challenges like land degradation, small landholdings, and limited access to fertilizers, the country has made notable strides, particularly through irrigation based wheat farming, which has transformed Ethiopia from a wheat-importing to a wheat exporting nation. The government has increased input distribution—fertilizers, pesticides, and seeds—and is promoting both chemical and organic methods while investing in capacity-building for farmers. Continued agriculture investments, sustainable practices, and agro-ecological research is driving the sector’s growth and supporting the country’s broader industrialization and food security goals.
