Kenya Nears Tariff-Free Deal with China, Opening New Horizons for Farmers
Kenya is moving closer to a bilateral trade deal with China that would remove tariffs on key agricultural
exports, including tea, coffee, and avocados. President William Ruto announced the agreement in principle
on August 6, noting that only the final bilateral instruments remain before it takes effect in a few months. The
deal is part of Kenya’s trade diversification strategy and could significantly boost exports, where the
government aims to quadruple sales to China by 2030. It also comes at a crucial time, following the U.S.’s
recent imposition of a 10% tariff on Kenyan goods, which ended previous duty-free access under AGOA.
Access to China’s vast market could help offset these losses and open transformative opportunities for
Kenyan farmers.
