Rapid-Cooking Bean Innovation Advances in Ethiopia and Across Africa
The University of Western Australia (UWA), through the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR)–funded Rapid Cooking Bean Project (RCBP), is driving agricultural innovation across six African countries, including Ethiopia, by developing high-yield, nutrient-rich bean varieties. In partnership with the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (Alliance-CIAT) and the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA), the project has reduced cooking time by around 30% while increasing iron and zinc content—enhancing both market value and nutrition for Ethiopian communities. Phase 2 prioritizes fast-tracking market-ready varieties, strengthening seed distribution systems, and ensuring inclusive participation of smallholder farmers. This approach demonstrates how combining research, climate resilience, and farmer-centered systems can support scalable, export-quality crops while uplifting local farming communities in Ethiopia and beyond.
