Ethiopia Accelerates Farm Modernization with Multi-Billion-Birr Mechanization Push

Ethiopia has stepped up its shift toward technology-driven agriculture by distributing farming machinery worth 2.32 billion Birr across all regional states and Dire Dawa. The package includes 63 tractors, 460 solar-powered irrigation units, and nearly 1,000 computers, aimed at improving both field productivity and institutional capacity. The initiative, supported by South Korea and several national resilience programs, is designed to move the sector away from subsistence farming toward a competitive, market-oriented system. Officials expect the expanded use of modern tools to boost yields, reduce labor intensity and post-harvest losses, and strengthen long-term food security and rural livelihoods.
