Ethiopia Accelerates Farm Mechanization and Urban Agriculture to Boost Food Sovereignty

Kenya Coffee Earnings Surge as Premium Grades Drive Strong Auction Performance

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture is scaling up mechanization and urban agriculture to strengthen food sovereignty, improve nutrition, and modernize the sector, Agriculture Minister Addisu Arega said. Duty-free imports of tractors and combine harvesters have supported the development of about 6.3 million hectares of land, highlighting the tangible impact of mechanization. The ministry is intensifying farmer awareness, capacity building, and local assembly and maintenance of machinery to sustain progress, while promoting urban farming to utilize idle land. Urban agriculture is expected to reduce household food costs by 10–20 percent and create up to 35 percent additional jobs, in line with the Medemer development concept.
